And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” …

The Question That Lingers
Have you ever paused mid-prayer and wondered whether the L-rd, for a sovereign moment, loosens the leash and lets the Accuser do his worst—not as an equal rival, but as an instrument in the hand of the Holy One? Does the same G-d who said “Go” to Satan in the book of Job still speak that dread permission today?

Satan is no cartoon villain with pitchfork and horns. He is cunning, ancient, and bitterly personal. C.S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters captured something of his bureaucratic malice, but the reality is far more intimate and far more dangerous. The enemy does not waste his energy on those already comfortably his. For the unbeliever, his task is simple: keep the heart numb to the universal call of the gospel. For the believer, the strategy shifts—paralyze, accuse, and lure into complacent defeat.

I have felt both ends of this blade.

The Personal Assault
There are seasons—Job-like seasons—when everything seems stripped away at the very moment one is already on one’s knees. The tempter arrives not with overt evil but with the polished logic of despair: Why keep striving? You’ve failed again. Look at your hypocrisy. The world sees it. G-d certainly does. The same voice that showed Jesus the kingdoms of the world from a high mountain (Matthew 4) whispers to us from our own personal pinnacles of weakness.

He is a counterfeiter, an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and a master at weaponizing our own consciences against us. Where the Holy Spirit convicts to restore and lead to repentance, Satan accuses to destroy and paralyze. He delights in creating the poster child of failure: the Christian who talks of grace yet stumbles publicly, the one whose visible hypocrisy becomes ammunition for the galleries of scoffers.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness…” (Isaiah 5:20)

That woe lands heavily on the prince of this world and all who march under his banner.

Theology in the Trenches
I have wrestled with darker questions in the night watches. Could Satan twist even my growing love for sound doctrine into a snare? Might he tempt me toward a sentimental universalism that would have mercy on the devil himself? The thought is not born of compassion but of a subtle rebellion against the holiness and justice of G-d. The angels themselves tread carefully around him (Jude 9). He is a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), but also a creature of unbearable pride who cannot endure scorn.

And yet—here is the tension that keeps the mind sharp and the knee bent—does not the sovereign G-d use even this malevolent intelligence for His own purposes? The Old Testament repeatedly shows the L-rd employing unlikely, even wicked, agents to accomplish His will. Satan is no exception. The same adversary who sought to destroy Job ultimately displayed the integrity of G-d’s servant more brightly. The same tempter who assaulted Jesus in the wilderness became the unwilling witness to the superiority of the Son of G-d.

In my own life, I have seen periods of profound darkness—spiritual, emotional, sometimes supernatural in flavor. The temptation is always present to explain it all away in purely natural categories: psychological stress, poor decisions, cultural influence, or the steady influence of faithful preaching and community. Satan would love that reduction. It robs G-d of glory and leaves man as the hero of his own rescue story (a subtle Pelagianism dressed in respectable clothes).

But I know what I experienced. I know the light that pierced that darkness was not of my own making, nor merely the product of human institutions, however good. It was the sovereign intervention of the Triune G-d.

The Line Between Conviction and Accusation

The difference is stark once you learn to discern it:

The Holy Spirit convicts the regenerate heart so that it runs to G-d in confession and dependence.
The Accuser condemns so that the heart runs from G-d in despair or self-justification.

One leads to justification by grace through faith. The other leads to theological fatalism: “Why even try?”

I have stood in that miserable crossroads more than once. The enemy’s genius is to alternate between “You must be perfect” (legalism) and “Since you’re not, stop pretending” (defeatism). Both keep the soul from resting in the finished work of Christ.

Soli Deo Gloria
The testimony, then, is not ultimately about Satan’s power—real though it is—but about the far greater power of the One who holds the leash. The same G-d who permitted the assault is the G-d who restores, rebukes the Accuser, and turns even the wrath of hell into praise for His name.

I still have questions. I suspect I always will this side of glory. But the questions no longer paralyze. They drive me back to the Word, back to prayer, back to the cross where the serpent’s head was decisively crushed.

The world and its god may cheer when a supposed follower of Christ falls. But the court of heaven records a different verdict for those clothed in the righteousness of the Surety.
Soli Deo Gloria.
Wit

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Yet greater is He who is in us.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Wit

Was it Satan?
