It thundered, it bloomed, it bled. The G-d of Israel was not first a set of propositions to be affirmed but a Presence to be encountered—merciful, yes, but mercy that could be felt like the cool rush of water over parched feet or the steady shade of a tree in the desert heat.

Consider Psalm 103:8: “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” To the modern Western ear, these are noble but vaporous virtues—admirable qualities hovering somewhere above the concrete mess of daily life. Yet the Hebrew mind demanded incarnation. Abstract excellence must put on flesh, or at least metaphor sturdy enough to bear weight. Mercy is not a warm feeling in the divine bosom; it is the concrete act of racham, a womb-like compassion that gathers the vulnerable. Steadfast love (chesed) is covenant loyalty you can bank your life on, the kind that shows up when every other prop has collapsed.

The contrast with Western description is instructive. We say a thing is “long and yellow.” The ancient Easterner asks: What does it do? A pencil is not primarily “wood and graphite”; it is that-by-which-you-write. Heaven itself receives scant architectural blueprints in Scripture because the biblical writers were less interested in real estate than in function: the place where G-d’s will is done perfectly, without hindrance. “On earth as it is in heaven” is not a pious wish for better zoning laws; it is a prayer that the concrete realities of this world would be invaded and reordered by the invisible kingdom. Perhaps an artist might sketch out the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with nothing more than those words—“as it is in heaven.” The pious man, meanwhile, steps into his garden to taste something of Genesis 1 when G-d declared it good, or escapes to the mountains for solitude, where nature, man, and G-d meet in unadorned clarity.

This is why the Psalter is saturated with arboreal imagery. The righteous man is “like a tree planted by streams of water” (Psalm 1:3). Not “spiritually nourished,” not “emotionally stable,” but a tree—roots gripping soil, leaves drinking sun, fruit appearing in season. Theology that remains only abstract risks becoming an elegant corpse (Luke 9:60): Calvinism rightly exalting divine sovereignty can, in clumsy hands, produce the theological fatalist who concludes that since G-d does all, man need do nothing. Prayer atrophies. Holiness becomes optional. The gap between heaven’s perfection and earth’s chaos yawns wider, unbridged.

Jesus Himself refused this divorce. “When you pray,” He says, “go into your room and shut the door” (Matthew 6:6). Concrete action—physical withdrawal, closed door, secret commerce with the Father—becomes the very means by which abstract relationship is forged. The kingdom comes not through better syllogisms but through embodied obedience: hands that serve, knees that bend, doors that close on the applause of men.

The danger, of course, runs both ways. Hyper-literalism can mutilate (Matthew 18:8 is not a call for sanctified amputation but a visceral warning about the cost of sin). Yet equally deadly is the sanitized abstraction that turns the living G-d into a doctrinal construct—safe, manageable, and ultimately irrelevant to the dirt under our fingernails. The unregenerate heart cannot cut off its own rebellious nature (Ezekiel 36:26-27); only the Spirit can perform that deeper surgery.

True piety, then, is the bridge. It is the tree drinking from the stream and yielding fruit. It is the secret room and the public witness. It is theology that does not oppose religion but sets it ablaze—Reformed rigor wedded to the fire of heartfelt devotion, always carefully anchored in orthodox doctrine lest the flames slip into the unorthodoxy that has so often attended unchecked experiential emphases.

Soli Deo Gloria.
Wit.

Notes:

Theological fatalism is the term to describe tension between the believer and doctrines of salvation (soteriology) that emphasize monergism and the sovereignty of G-d. Like logical fatalism actions are made unnecessary therefore eliminating any incentives for personal holiness.

Literalism can be an obstacle while interpreting and attempting scriptural application. For example, Matthew 18:8 “And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.” And Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Interestingly, the phrase today, “common sense” involves understanding both abstract and concrete existences and the problems or malfunctions that partition, preventing either from becoming one; therefore, the tendency is to feed or to be fed by one or the other.

In Matthew 18:8 Jesus conveys what He meant, however the unregenerate or natural man while he can cut off his hand or pluck out his eye cannot remove his own heart Ezekiel 36:25-27.

Abstract and Concrete Symbols Bridging the Gap: Concrete Symbols Behind Abstract Divine AttributesIn the ancient Hebrew mind, divine reality did not float in the ethereal mists of Platonic abstraction.
