Misplaced allegiance moves the front farther from home, leaving the true territory exposed. There is no neutral ground—only gathering with the King or scattering before the advance.

No Neutral Ground: Dual Citizenship Did Not Save Jesus, Paul, or Luther
Matthew 12:30 stands as one of the starkest declarations in the Gospels: “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters” (ESV). Spoken in the midst of the Beelzebul controversy, after Jesus has driven out a demon and been accused of operating by the prince of demons, the saying admits no third category. The kingdoms of G-d and of Satan stand in absolute opposition. Neutrality is not merely unwise; it is impossible. To withhold allegiance is already to oppose. To refrain from gathering is already to scatter.

This absolute claim is not a New Testament novelty. It is the consistent, repetitive summons issued to Israel throughout the Old Testament: do not be absorbed by the surrounding nations, their culture, their gods, or their ways. From the wilderness to the exile, the Word of the L-rd returns again and again to the same demand for separation. “You shall make no covenant with them and their gods. They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me” (Ex. 23:32–33). “Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst… You shall not intermarry with them… for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods” (Ex. 34:12, 16). Deuteronomy intensifies the command: “You shall not intermarry with them… For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth” (Deut. 7:3, 6). The same warning appears in Leviticus 18:3 and 20:23, Joshua 23:7–13, and throughout the prophetic corpus. Israel is not to learn the abominable practices of the nations (Deut. 18:9), not to walk in their statutes, not to be assimilated.

The prohibition against mixed fabric in Leviticus 19:19 and Deuteronomy 22:11 functions as a concrete sign of this deeper reality. “You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together.” The material mixture is a visible parable of spiritual and covenantal mixture. When the holy is blended with the unholy, the result is not enrichment but contamination.

The fabric no longer clearly belongs to either category; it becomes ambiguous, compromised, and ultimately useless for its intended consecrated purpose. The same principle governs Israel’s calling. A mixed people cannot remain a holy people. The mixture does not produce a higher synthesis; it produces confusion of identity, erosion of boundaries, and eventual defense of what G-d has declared unclean.

That is precisely what the mixed fabric does. Once the lines are blurred, the people of G-d begin to protect and justify the unholy. They defend the dogs—the unclean, the outsiders who remain outside the covenant, those who tear and devour rather than submit to the Shepherd. In Scripture the dog is repeatedly a figure of the unclean and the hostile (Phil. 3:2; Rev. 22:15; cf. Matt. 15:26). When Israel absorbs the surrounding culture, she ceases to drive out the dogs and begins to feed them, excuse them, and finally fight for their place within the camp. The prophets repeatedly charge Israel with this inversion: calling evil good and good evil, putting light for darkness and darkness for light (Isa. 5:20). The mixture produces not tolerance but active advocacy for what G-d has forbidden. The people who were called to be distinct become the defenders of the very things that destroy distinction.

This Old Testament pattern of no neutral ground and no permissible mixture frames the New Testament declaration in Matthew 12:30. Dual or multiple loyalties—ethnic, civic, cultural, or ecclesial—cannot secure safety when the demand is exclusive allegiance. The lives of Jesus, Paul, and Martin Luther illustrate the point with particular force. None of them was rescued by the dual identities available to them. Their ultimate security lay solely in the kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Jesus: Son of David under Roman Occupation
Jesus of Nazareth was an ethnic Jew, raised within the covenant people, circumcised on the eighth day, observant of Torah, and addressed as a teacher within Israel. At the same time, He lived under Roman imperial rule. Judea and Galilee were subject territories; the prefect exercised the power of life and death, and the local Jewish leadership operated only within the limits Rome permitted. In that limited sense Jesus possessed a dual existence: member of the elect nation and subject of a pagan empire.

Neither identity shielded Him. The Jewish authorities delivered Him up; the Roman governor authorized the crucifixion. When the crowds and the Sanhedrin rejected Him, no appeal to Davidic descent or to the privileges of Jewish identity stayed the verdict. When Pilate washed his hands, no claim of Roman legal protection intervened. The cross stands as the decisive historical demonstration that dual status—covenantal and imperial—cannot save. Jesus Himself framed the alternatives with uncompromising clarity: “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other” (Matt. 6:24). The same principle appears in Luke 16:13. Allegiance cannot be divided without eventual collapse.

Paul: Hebrew of Hebrews and Roman Citizen
Paul’s dual credentials were even more explicit. He was “circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee” (Phil. 3:5). Simultaneously he possessed Roman citizenship by birth (Acts 22:25–28), a rare and valuable status that afforded legal protections against scourging and the right of appeal to Caesar. He could move between Jewish synagogues and Greco-Roman civic life with unusual freedom.

Yet neither citizenship delivered him. His Pharisaic zeal produced persecution of the church until the Damascus road. His Roman citizenship delayed certain punishments and eventually brought him to Rome, but it did not prevent repeated beatings, imprisonments, or final execution under Nero. Paul himself relativized both identities: “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Phil. 3:7–8). Elsewhere he writes that “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil. 3:20). Earthly dual status is temporary scaffolding; the only lasting polis is the kingdom of G-d.

Luther: Saxon Subject and Imperial German
Martin Luther lived within the complex overlapping jurisdictions of the late medieval Holy Roman Empire. He was a subject of the Elector of Saxony and, more broadly, a German within an empire that still claimed universal Christian authority under the emperor and the pope. In the early years of the Reformation he could, and did, appeal to German national feeling and to the protection of territorial princes against Rome. The address To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation (1520) is the clearest example.

Yet dual political and ecclesial identity did not secure him. Imperial ban, papal condemnation, and the constant threat of violence remained.

Luther’s decisive stand at Worms—“Here I stand”—was not an appeal to Saxon privilege or German nationality. It was an appeal to Scripture and conscience bound by the Word of G-d. The later principle cuius regio, eius religio would settle external religious boundaries along territorial lines, but it could not create saving faith. Luther’s own theology of the two kingdoms insisted that the spiritual kingdom is ruled solely by the Word and that civil authority, however legitimate, cannot confer righteousness before G-d.

Why the Appeal to Dual Citizenship Persists
Why, then, do people still reach for dual or multiple loyalties as a form of spiritual insurance? One powerful motive is the quiet rejection—or at least the practical mitigation—of the doctrine of total depravity. If human nature is not radically corrupted, if residual capacity remains to choose rightly or to balance competing claims, then a carefully managed dual identity can appear sufficient. One may remain culturally Jewish while affirming Jesus in a limited way; one may retain Roman legal protections while preaching the gospel; one may keep national or confessional identity intact while adding a private faith. Neutrality begins to look possible. The mixed fabric seems workable.

Scripture closes that door. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9). “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless” (Rom. 3:10–12). “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him” (1 Cor. 2:14). Jesus’ own diagnosis is blunt: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). Without the new birth there is no middle ground.

Further texts reinforce the binary. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial?” (2 Cor. 6:14–15). “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons” (1 Cor. 10:21). “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). “Whoever is not with me is against me” (Matt. 12:30) is not an isolated proverb; it is the consistent biblical pattern that runs from the Torah’s demand for separation through the prophets’ denunciation of syncretism to the L-rd’s own absolute claim.

The desire for dual citizenship often functions as a hedge against the cost of exclusive allegiance. It allows one to keep ethnic honor, civic privilege, cultural respectability, or institutional safety while still claiming some relation to Christ. This temptation is not limited to the first century or the Reformation. It appears among American citizens who lean on national pride or patriotic identity as a kind of spiritual insurance policy, and among Jews who cling to ethnic and historical honor as a parallel security. Pride and patriotism can be ordered rightly under the lordship of Christ; yet they easily become a crutch—something leaned upon for identity, moral cover, and a sense of righteousness—rather than a secondary affection held loosely. When they function this way, they obscure the exclusive claim of the King. The cross exposes every such hedge. Jesus did not negotiate dual status; He was crucified under it. Paul counted every earthly credential loss. Luther risked the ban of both empire and church. Their examples, and the plain force of Matthew 12:30 together with the Old Testament’s unrelenting call to refuse absorption by the nations, leave no room for a third way.

There is only gathering or scattering, with Christ or against Him. Behind the confusion of dual loyalties and the shifting lines of the battlefield stands the true adversary: Satan as puppet master, skillfully pulling the strings of total depravity. He works both sides of the field, stirring ethnic pride on one hand and civic or patriotic confidence on the other, deepening division while men argue over who the enemy is. The mixed fabric, the dual passport, the patriotic crutch—all become instruments in his hand. Yet none of these can save. In such a climate of confusion, discernment is not optional but necessary. Paul writes, “for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized” (1 Cor. 11:19). Divisions, painful as they are, serve a revealing purpose: they expose what is true and what is counterfeit. The Bereans modeled the required response when they “received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11). Only those who test every claim—ethnic, civic, patriotic, or religious—against the unchanging Word will stand approved. The only citizenship that endures is the one granted by the King who was Himself rejected by every earthly jurisdiction available to Him.

Solie Deo Gloira.
Wit

No Neutral Ground: Dual Citizenship Is a Crutch Jesus, Paul & Luther Never Needed No Neutral Ground: Dual Citizenship Did Not Save Jesus, Paul, or LutherMatthew 12:30 stands as one of the starkest declarations in the Gospels: “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters” (ESV).
