He puts fire to the leaves that hid the barrenness—and to the heretics who called the fire “unloving.”

In an age when the church swaps the two-edged sword for a lukewarm latte and a #hashtag, I am done whispering. The heresy of the hour is not the Pharisee with phylacteries. It is the fruitcake fig tree that bears no fruit and then lectures the axeman about “tone.” It is antinomianism—hyper-grace, cheap pardon, the doctrine that faith abolishes the moral law rather than writing it on the heart. I am taking a flamethrower to it. Not a metaphor I borrowed from a youth pastor. A tool. Because some corpses in the road do not move until a man with conviction kicks them.

A dead dog has no purpose. No holiness. Holiness is not a mood. It is consecration—(קֹדֶשׁ) qodesh—separation unto the Holy One. A carcass lying in the street is not a sacrament. It is a public health hazard. The chicken of popular piety never crosses the road; it tweets about “nuance” from the curb. Unless somebody contrary to that chicken actually crosses—unless a watchman with enough spine puts his boot into the bloated theology and rolls it off the pavement—the dead dog just lies there, stinking up the conversation, paralyzing every participant who still believes words mean things. I will kick it. You may call that unloving. Scripture calls it removing the leaven.

What the Heresy Actually Is
Antinomianism is not a misspelled seminary word. From anti and nomos: against law. In its Sunday clothes it is called hyper-grace. The claim is tidy: by faith and G-d’s grace a Christian is freed from all laws—including the moral standards that even pagans used to blush at—rather than the law becoming transparent to the righteous because Scripture has transformed the man. Sanctification is swapped for slogan. Dead faith abolishes the law for the sake of lawlessness. James is not impressed. “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17). The extreme monergist who treats any call to obedience as an insult to sovereignty has simply baptized sloth and called it gospel.

Paul already heard the slogan and spat it out: “Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means!” (Romans 6:1–2). “Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law” (Romans 3:31). Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17). Fulfillment is not incineration. A filled cup is not an empty cup.

Today the mask is everywhere. The pastor who will not name adultery because “we’re under grace.” The influencer who treats sobriety, sexual fidelity, and truthful speech as optional extras for “legalists.” The church that platforms a man living in open fornication because “who are we to judge?”—then judges the brother who still thinks the seventh commandment has a pulse. The activist Christian who will march against “phobia” but will not tell a thief to keep his hands in his pockets. The politician-pastor hybrid who blesses whatever the culture currently blesses and calls the remnant Pharisees. Social media is #1 Joe. Daily Scripture is a rumor. They do not dive. They skim. Then they catechize the skim.

Every Christian who dares a moral conviction is instantly recast as the accuser in John 8. Wife, husband, children, the congregation, even the magistrate—all must now accommodate the sin, because two witnesses were not standing there with rocks. That is not exegesis. That is a hostage situation.

Legalism Is Not the Same Disease
Define the opposite error so no one hides behind the word. Legalism is the insistence that a sinner is accepted by G-d on the basis of law-keeping—or on the basis of man-made hedges piled on top of Torah. It treats the covenant as a contract you fulfill to purchase standing. It boasts. It measures. It adds fences and then worships the fence. The Pharisees who tithed mint and neglected justice were legalists. The Judaizers who demanded circumcision for justification were legalists. The modern checklist saint who treats quiet-time minutes as currency in heaven is a legalist.

Common legalist arguments: “If you were serious you would keep my extra rules.” “Grace is the prize at the end of performance.” “Doubt your salvation whenever you fail my standard.” Fine. Burn that too. But notice the cheap trick: antinomians use “legalism” the way a kleptomaniac uses “judgmental.” Anyone who still says “You shall not steal” is suddenly a Pharisee. That is not a contrast. That is a smokescreen.

The law is not the enemy of the righteous. “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul” (Psalm 19:7). For the man who does not steal, the statute against theft is transparent. It does not harass him. It does not paralyze him. It simply describes the grain of G-d’s world. Abolish the statute, and the kleptomaniac never bothers to keep his hands in his pockets. Why would he? You told him the law was nailed to the tree so he could keep nailing other people’s property to his own. That is not liberty. That is defeatism with a worship band. The struggler who actually hates his sin is told there is no standard left to struggle toward. So he quits. Hyper-grace does not free the addict. It anesthetizes the conscience and calls the coma “rest.”

Theology Without Religion Is a Ghost
Theology is speech about G-d—theologia. Religion, from religare, is the binding: piety, practice, the fear that actually alters a Tuesday. Both matter. Abstract theology without concrete religious piety is a lecture on fire safety delivered by a man whose house is burning. You can parse monergism until the Greek sweats and still never confess, never fast, never keep your pants on, never return what you stole. That is not Reformed depth. That is a fig tree with leaves. Jesus cursed that tree (Mark 11:12–14, 20–21). I am merely agreeing with Him at higher temperature.

Religion without theology becomes superstition and club manners. Theology without religion becomes a salon. The antinomian prefers the salon. No altar. No trembling. No “how then shall we live?” Just a system that excuses the self and then demands that every case-study classroom in the church accommodate every sin the speaker has already made. Can anybody accommodate every sin they have made? Should that be the standard by which we abolish the moral law? That is not a church. That is a support group for the unrepentant.

Axios: From Pig-Tongue Greek to the Holy Tongue
The apostles did not say “try harder.” They said walk worthy.

“Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called” (Ephesians 4:1)—after three chapters of unearned election, adoption, and sealing.

“Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work” (Colossians 1:10).

“Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ” (Philippians 1:27).

“Walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory” (1 Thessalonians 2:12).

The Greek is axiōs—ἄξιος: of equal weight, corresponding to, befitting. Your gait should weigh the same as the gift. Not purchase the gift. Match it, as a vessel matches what it was formed to carry. This is not poetry stolen from a gym. It is a scale. “A just balance and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are his work” (Proverbs 16:11). “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight” (Proverbs 11:1). Job asked to be weighed in an honest balance so G-d would know his integrity (Job 31:6). Belshazzar was weighed—Tekel—and found wanting (Daniel 5:27). The so-called righteous in Christ who will not put their walk on that pan have not escaped the scale. They have only stuffed the bag with lighter stones and called the cheat “imputed righteousness.” Union with Christ does not remove the weights. It puts the true Weight on your side of the beam—and then demands a gait that does not make a liar of the gift. If the calling is heavy and your Tuesday is air, the balance is already talking. You just refuse to look at the needle.

What the Heresy Says to the (ideal) Jew
Now shift the pig-tongue of the lecture hall to the holy tongue. Hebrew does not flatter. It walks. Halakhah (הֲלָכָה) is not a rabbinic hobby; it is the verb of discipleship: הָלַךְ—to go, to walk. “You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you” (Deuteronomy 5:33). “He has told you, O man, what is good… to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord” (Psalm 119:1). Worthy walking is derekh (אָנֹכִי הַדֶּרֶךְ וְהָאֱמֶת וְהַחַיִּים John 14:6) Hashem—the way of the L-rd—not a Greek abstraction you admire and then ignore. Ezekiel had already promised the engine: “I will sprinkle clean water on you… I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you… And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules” (Ezekiel 36:25–27). Grace does not abolish the statutes. Grace causes the walk. Obedience is not the price of the Spirit. It is the fruit the Spirit refuses to counterfeit.

Antinomianism does not only rot a Gentile pew. It walks up to the people who first heard “walk” and tells them otherwise. It tells the Jew that Sinai was a temporary embarrassment, that halakhah is a hobby for the unenlightened, that the statutes Ezekiel said the Spirit would cause them to keep have been quietly shredded by a seminar. “Your law is a curse. Your walk is the problem. Grace means stop.” That is not the gospel Paul preached to synagogues. That is a theft of their Book followed by a lecture on how to misread the stolen pages.

Hear what they actually go through when this heresy puts on a missionary smile. For centuries they have been told the covenant of their fathers expired on a timetable drawn in Rome and Geneva—not “fulfilled” as Messiah filling what was spoken, but abolished, as if the Holy One changed His mind about His own mouth. They keep Shabbat and are called legalists. They refuse the pig and are called bound. They bind the Word to the doorpost and some Christian with a study Bible informs them the doorpost was nailed to the tree so they can forget the house. Psalm 119 is their acrostic. “Oh how I love your law!” is not a Gentile discovery. Then a hyper-grace preacher uses their own psalm as wallpaper while insisting the law they love is the enemy of the grace they need. That is not evangelism. That is gaslighting a people in the name of their own Scriptures.

Worse: the same mouth that abolishes the moral law for the church has often turned and accused the Jew of being the problem for still treating it as law. If he walks, he is a Pharisee. If the church refuses to walk, it is “free.” The scale is rigged. Israel is damned for the fidelity the church was supposed to learn, and the church is congratulated for the lawlessness Israel was judged for in the prophets. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos did not scorch the nation for loving Torah too much. They scorched it for not walking. “They have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts” (Isaiah 5:24). Antinomianism hears that verdict, nods solemnly at “those Jews then,” and then offers the same rejection as a sacrament now.

Paul—Hebrew of Hebrews, not a mascot—never told Israel to throw the tablets in the river. “The law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good” (Romans 7:12). “Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law” (Romans 3:31). Uphold—not edit, not soften, not womanize into a sugar-coated suggestion that never reproves. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Even if a hypocrite’s lips move over those verses, the standard does not change because the speaker is a fraud. The words remain the standard. Reproof remains reproof. Correction remains correction. Training in righteousness is not optional therapy. It is the fruit the Spirit refuses to counterfeit. The gifts and the calling of G-d are irrevocable (Romans 11:29). Fulfillment in Messiah is not incineration of Moses. A filled cup is still a cup. The heresy tells the Jew the cup was the problem. Then it wonders why he will not drink from the hand that smashed it.

This is not a brief for self-justification by works of the law. Moses already closed that door: the heart must be circumcised (Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6). Ezekiel promised the heart of flesh so that they would walk. The antinomian hears “new heart” and throws away the road. The Jew who still loves the road is not your foil. He is your rebuke. You took his tongue—halakh—and turned it into a punchline. He still walks. You still post. Tell him otherwise if you must. Just do not pretend G-d asked you to.

James stands at the door with a mirror. Not the dead in faith. Not the monergist who has so exalted G-d’s monergy that he has excused his own inertia. “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:18). Abraham believed—and offered. Rahab believed—and hid the spies. The demons believe—and shudder, and stay demons. The hyper-grace crowd prefers a different mythology: vampires who have no reflection. They step up to James’s glass and see nothing—no fruit, no repentance, no walk—and they call the blankness immortality. No end to their lives, they think. No death of the old man. No judgment that can find a face. A creature with no reflection cannot be examined; a creed with no works cannot be tested. That is not eternal life. That is undeath. The gospel raises corpses. Antinomianism merely files the fangs and swears the coffin is a sanctuary.

The Woman, the Missing Witnesses, and “Go and Sin No More”
Now the favorite text of the lawless: the woman caught in adultery. Some note—correctly—that John 7:53–8:11 is absent from the earliest manuscripts. Some say the church hesitated because laymen would mishandle it. Let us suppose it belongs. Grant the pericope. What actually happens?

The law they pretended to love required two or three witnesses (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15). They produced the woman. They did not produce the man. The husband—hypothetically speaking—is not even on stage. We do not know if he was dead, complicit, raging outside, or a fiction of the trap. Jesus does not abolish the statute. He exposes the prosecutors. When the accusers slink off, He does not say, “Your sexuality is your truth.” He says, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:11).

Was His mission to abolish every consequence so she could whore after again? Did He empty the seventh commandment so the next lover could be called a sacrament? Now that the sin and its public shame were brought to her attention—did grace mean the bed stays warm and the husband, if he exists, eats the loss? Look at the other well. The Samaritan woman had five husbands, and the man she had was not her husband (John 4:16–18). Jesus did not substantiate the roster. He did not bless the sixth arrangement as “her truth.” He named the history without anesthesia, then offered living water that does not leave a woman drawing from the same cracked cistern. He did not canonize the five. He exposed them so she could leave the jar and walk. “Go and sin no more” is not antinomian. It is the opposite. Pardon without a new walk is a lie with a halo.

G-d does not reveal His law so everybody can play savior, collecting waifs to prove how tender they are. He reveals the law as the standard of His holy nature so that we can worship in holiness—that is, so that we do not offend G-d in sins and trespasses. The law is a portrait, not a ladder. Smash the portrait and you do not get more mercy. You get a room with no face on the wall and a congregation that no longer knows what mercy is for.

Lukewarm, Fruitless, Spewed
Revelation does not flatter the middle. “Because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). The Greek is emeo—vomit. The L-rd of the churches is not a brand ambassador. Fruitless trees are not dialogued with. They are cut down (Luke 13:6–9). I am done pretending that a man who will not open the Book except to harvest a verse for his feed is a “brother in process.” He is Luke-warm. Spew him. Take the flame to every fruitless fruitcake fig tree that has leaves of doctrine and no fruit of repentance.

I write this as a man who is tired of watching the remnant get muzzled by people who have never fasted from their own appetites. I have watched “grace” used as a silencer in rooms that used to be able to run a case study like adults. In a legal classroom you can still say, “This act is theft.” In many churches you cannot say it without being charged with violence against someone’s identity. That paralysis is the point of the heresy. If every participant must accommodate every sin already committed, there is no longer a standard—only a sliding scale of embarrassment.

The Last Stanza: Lost Sheep Who Still Want the Law
Psalm 119 does not end in swagger. It ends in a gasp that antinomians cannot pray without lying.

Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word!
Let my plea come before you;
deliver me according to your word.
My lips will pour forth praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
My tongue will sing of your word,
for all your commandments are right.
Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
I long for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my delight.
Let my soul live and praise you,
and let your rules help me.
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
for I do not forget your commandments.
(Psalm 119:169–176)

The lost sheep does not petition for the abolition of the fold. He begs to be sought because he has not forgotten the commandments. That is the difference between a sinner who wants holiness and a heretic who wants a hall pass. Ezekiel promised the water, the heart, the Spirit, the walk. The psalmist wants the same thing: life that praises, rules that help, a Shepherd who finds the stray without burning the map.

So I ask the reader who is guilty of this heresy—yes, you, the one who has been excusing yourself and creating a lawless environment that paralyzes every participant in objective conversation: How do you like it? How do you like a room where no case can be judged, no thief rebuked, no adulterer told to stop, no pastor held to the holy nature of G-d? Can anybody accommodate every sin they have made? Should that be the standard by which we abolish the moral law? Christ did not die to make holiness optional. He died to make a people who walk axiōs—equal weight with the calling—on the old paths, with a new heart.

A dead dog has no purpose. I have crossed the street.
